Drivers from Minas Gerais who missed the deadline for paying the 2024 Motor Vehicle Property Tax (IPVA) now have the opportunity to pay the debt in up to 12 installments.

The regular IPVA scale ended in March and, according to the superintendent of Credit and Collection of the State Finance Department (SEF), Leonardo Guerra Ribeiro, taxpayers who are behind on their tax should seek regularization as soon as possible, to avoid accumulation charges and other administrative sanctions.

Installments can be simulated and contracted directly online, on the SEF website, by choosing the IPVA option in the quick access menu on the home page and, on the internal page, by clicking on Installments. The amount of fine and interest for delay is calculated automatically.

“In option 1, the citizen and taxpayer will be able to simulate the installment plan and, if deemed appropriate, promote the inclusion of the installment plan, via the internet. At the end, you must pay the collection document to have your payment made in installments. Every month, he must remember to issue and pay the next installment, which is due on the penultimate business day of the month”, explains the superintendent.

It should be noted that the minimum value of installments must be R$200. In other words, debts lower than R$400 cannot be paid in installments.

Alerts

Failure to pay the IPVA may result in the debt being registered as an active debt and forwarded to a notary protest. Furthermore, the driver will not have access to the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Certificate (CRLV), which is issued by the traffic authority. The vehicle that is caught driving without the CRLV will be subject to the sanctions provided for in the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB).

SEF warns, once again, to be careful with attempted scams involving IPVA, mainly through false links and websites promising discounts for paying the tax. To avoid fraud, the main recommendation is to always access the Finance Department website and not click on links received via messaging applications, social networks or email.

Revenue

In 2023, the State Revenue managed to recover around R$400 million, the result of 140 thousand IPVA installments. For 2024, the expectation is that more than 150 thousand installments will be made.

Of the resources collected with IPVA, as determined by legislation, 40% are allocated to the State Treasury, 40% are transferred to the municipalities where the vehicles are registered and 20% go to the Basic Education Development Fund (Fundeb).
