At the beginning of the year, funk producer GR6 announced an agreement with the city hall to revitalize sports courts. The company produces musicians like MC Don Juan himself. “We will choose 40 neighborhoods to carry out this project, each neighborhood will be ‘sponsored’ by a GR6 artist”, wrote the producer on social media. The reporter tried to contact the company and the MC, but received no response — the space remains open.
Nunes’ rapprochement with the periphery worries Boulos’ allies. But the psolist’s pre-campaign says that, in parallel to meetings with businesspeople, he maintains ties and dialogue with the most distant regions. The pre-candidate’s allies believe that the presence of President Lula (PT) is an important asset in attracting the vote of the poorest voters — who, in their assessment, is a group that “is interested in the election on the eve of the election.”
Peripheral votes must be the subject of intense dispute between opponents. According to Datafolha, Boulos does better than Nunes in the highest family income strata (43% to 31% of voting intentions in the range of 5 to 10 minimum wages and 41% to 17% in the range above 10 wages). Among people with an income of up to two minimum wages (R$2,824), the result is reversed, and the emedebista has 30%, compared to 24% for the psolista.
How the periphery voted in past elections
Progressives have a better record on the periphery. The electoral map of the capital of São Paulo from the last disputes shows, on the other hand, a better performance of conservative candidates in the central regions. It was like that in 2004, when Marta lost to José Serra (PSDB); in 2008, when the PT member was defeated again by Gilberto Kassab (then DEM); and in 2012, when Fernando Haddad (PT) beat Serra.
In 2016, João Doria won in the first round in 56 of the city’s 58 electoral zones. He lost in Parelheiros and Grajaú to Marta, at the time affiliated with the PMDB. In 2020, Covas beat Boulos in 50 zones — the psolist did better in peripheral regions of the east zone, such as São Mateus and Cidade Tiradentes, and in the south zone, in Campo Limpo, Parelheiros, Grajaú, Capão Redondo, Piraporinha and Valo Velho.
