The arrival of a new month also brings hope of the onset of cold weather, as in recent weeks the south of Santa Catarina has recorded high temperatures. In Criciúma, for example, there was a thermal sensation of 52°C on March 20th.

“Forecasts for the next four weeks do not place any persistent cold wave over Santa Catarina. We will have passages of cold fronts, with up to three cooler days, but no intense cold yet in the projections. This year the most severe cold has not yet appeared on the maps”, explains the climatologist from the Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Company of Santa Catarina (Epagri/Urussanga), Márcio Sônego.

According to Sônego, what is known so far is that the temperature of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru will change from warmer to colder, and this is a change from El Niño to La Niña. “Spring tends to have less rain (planting times), winters tend to have the usual cold of the season, not necessarily record cold. However, the models still do not show the strongest cold that can occur in winter. Rains from July already appear on the forecast maps, this could indicate a drier July, with a predominance of nights with clearer skies, and consequent cold nights and hot afternoons, I believe”, he highlights.

The average temperature of the autumn months is: March 23.3°C, April 20.9°C and May 17.2°C. “The temperature will drop six degrees by May, when autumn is ending. As for rain, in autumn it is good. We have, on average, 164 millimeters in March, 98 millimeters in April and 127 in May”, he details. “The month of April rains a little less. It is one of the months that rains the least in the year, and, consequently, it is also the month that can go up to two weeks without rain”, he adds.

This year, Autumn is being influenced by El Niño, which only ends in May. “In the month of June, the button flips for La Niña. We follow here in the forecasts that La Niña will influence more in the second half of the year, especially in winter, with temperatures within normal limits. It will be a winter, I’m not saying it will be colder compared to the historical average, but a colder winter than in 2023”, he comments.
