President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT)’s agenda this week includes a visit to Rio de Janeiro. The commitments scheduled for Tuesday (2nd) cover three central aspects of the PT member’s relationship with the state: support for Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) in the capital, the nod to the shipping industry and the strengthening of the PT through membership of the Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco.

With Paes, Lula will inaugurate Impa Tech, the first degree in Mathematics at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics. Impa’s main headquarters is in Horto, in the South Zone of the capital of Rio de Janeiro, but the new campus with undergraduate courses is in the Porto Maravilha region, an area that the mayor seeks to expand. Last year, the president had already visited the unit’s works. The university has investments from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

In addition to the public commitment with Paes, the visit to Rio is interesting to see if there will be progress in the conversations between him and Lula about the Rio election. Last week, the national PT decided that the president will act more directly in the disputes in Rio and Recife, cities in which the party is trying, despite the difficulties, to have Paes and João Campos (PSB) as vice president.

In Niterói, a municipality commanded by Axel Grael (PDT), also an ally, Lula will honor the naval industry – a sector always present in the PT member’s speeches about Rio de Janeiro. In the city’s port, dredging work will begin on the São Lourenço Channel.

In the 2022 election, Niterói was the only city in the Rio Metropolitan Region in which the PT member defeated Jair Bolsonaro (PL). And he did it in both shifts. There, the PDT candidate in this year’s municipal dispute will be former mayor Rodrigo Neves, also supported by the PT.

Finally, Lula participates in minister Anielle Franco’s affiliation with the party. The event, as GLOBO anticipated, will be at Circo Voador. The sister of councilor Marielle Franco (PSOL), who died in 2018, is seen by the PT as an important figure for 2026. She could be a candidate for the Senate or a vote-getter for the Chamber of Deputies, according to leaders of the party.
