There were seven years in a row without any record of violent deaths in Ponto Belo, a city in the extreme north of Espírito Santo, 358 kilometers from the capital, Vitória. The tranquility in the region was shattered this weekend, when five armed men invaded a family party and opened fire.

Three people were shot, including a 10-year-old child, who suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach. Júnior do Carmo Vandel Reis, aged 38, died after being rescued. Thales do Carmo Pereira de Souza was also shot, but survived the attack.

The last homicide recorded in Ponto Belo occurred on March 25, 2017, in the rural area of the city. In 2023, according to Chief Eduardo Mota, head of the city’s Police Station (DP), there were two attempted murders, but the victims did not die. Two suspects in the crimes were arrested.

One of the city’s weaknesses is its extensive border with two other Brazilian states, Bahia and Minas Gerais. On their escape route, bandits and drug traffickers usually hide in Ponto Belo. Anonymous complaints, according to the police, have been fundamental in solving crimes and putting criminals in jail.
