Residents of the interior of Acre felt the second earthquake in less than 24 hours, on Wednesday night (27). According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the 5.1 magnitude tremor was recorded in the city of Pucallpa, Peru, however, residents of Cruzeiro do Sul, 631 km from Rio Branco, report having felt the movement. There were no incidents related to the tremor.

According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred around 11 p.m. At that time, motorcycle taxi driver Alessandro Martins was lying down when he felt the ground move. He mentioned it to his wife, who initially didn’t feel it, and spoke to Rede Amazônica Acre about the scare.

“I was lying in bed with my wife, I felt it, and I said to her: my old lady, the earth is shaking. She said no. It was 11 o’clock at night, I was already in bed. I was a little scared, because it’s not often that the earth shakes, so we get a little scared. It didn’t take long, I don’t think it was even two minutes. At first I didn’t imagine it was an earthquake, but I remembered that my daughter said that there had been an earthquake in Marechal Thaumaturgo. But here it was weaker than in Marechal,” she said.

The earthquake in Marechal Thaumaturgo mentioned by Martins also had a magnitude of 5.1, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, and occurred on Wednesday morning, around 14 hours before what was felt in the second largest city in the state. This was also the fourth seismic shock felt in the state in 2024.

According to data from the Google Earth platform, Pucallpa is just over 226 km from Cruzeiro do Sul. Still in the city, self-employed Maria Cilene Souza also felt the tremor during the night. She said she only found out that it was a reflection of an earthquake after arriving at work this Thursday morning (28). Maria Cilene was at home with her children and thought it was an attempted invasion.

“I felt the earthquake, but I didn’t know what it was. I thought someone was breaking into the house, I don’t know, shaking the house. I opened the window, looked around, didn’t see anything, didn’t see anyone. My children were scared, it was very quick, but I felt it, it was strong. I didn’t know it was an earthquake, I came to find out here at the market today, because people were talking about it. I got scared because it shook the house a lot. My house is made of wood, we feel it much better than a masonry house”, he reported.
