Excessive salt consumption, for example, is one of the factors that most contributes to increased blood pressure. Therefore, what is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) is to ingest up to 5g per day.

However, it is also not recommended to remove it completely from the diet. “Excess salt is harmful. However, we have to remember that our body needs a minimum amount of salt in the diet”, says cardiologist Dr. Francisco Maia.

Feeding adjustments are necessary

For a healthy diet that helps reduce high pressure, some changes and substitutions must be taken into account. The good performance of treatment and prevention often depends on the patient’s effort. This does not always mean going through deprivations or sacrifices, but rather changes in some habits, starting with food.

“Several studies have already proven the influence of a good diet in the treatment of hypertension. Both for the treatment and prevention of the disease, the patient should avoid fatty foods, excess carbohydrates with a high glycemic index, processed foods that contain high sodium content and table salt itself”, warns nutritionist Reila Satel, post- degree in Clinical Nutrition.
