According to information released by US authorities, a person contracted bird flu after contact with supposedly infected dairy cows, in Texas. However, there are no signs that the virus has evolved to the point where it can spread more easily among humans.

The virus identified in the dairy cows and the Texas patient is the same version of H5N1, a subtype of influenza that circulates in North American birds. This has already affected other animals as well as marine mammals around the world.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the main symptom identified in the patient was conjunctivitis. The American is being treated with antiviral medication and recovering. The CDC is working with U.S. health departments to monitor people who have had contact with infected animals and birds.

This is the second case of H5N1 bird flu in people in U.S. The first, registered in 2022, affected an inmate who killed infected birds on a farm in the county of Montrose, Colorado. His only symptom was fatigue and he recovered.

What is bird flu?

Avian influenza is a group of influenza viruses adapted primarily to birds. The specific strain of these new cases, called H5N1, was first identified in 1996 in geese in China and in people in Hong Kong in 1997.

However, in 2020, a new, highly pathogenic form of H5N1 emerged in Europe and spread rapidly throughout the world. In the United States, it affected more than 82 million poultry, the worst bird flu outbreak in the country’s history.

In May 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock declared a state of animal health emergency throughout the national territory due to cases of avian influenza detected in wild birds. In this sense, in July, the Japan adjusted the protocol for suspending the import of chicken and eggs produced in Brazil. The restriction was applied only to municipalities where outbreaks of the disease were detected. However, no Brazilian contracted the flu.
