Although researchers are still investigating the exact mechanisms by which these products affect the body, the connection between their consumption and the development of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems and obesity, has already been established. The relationship between these foods and the increased risk of various types of cancer has also been the subject of study for years.

However, reversing this situation is not a simple task. We recognize that unpacking processed foods is easier than preparing meals with fresh ingredients. Furthermore, the prices of these products and the difficulty in accessing a diversified diet at affordable prices are significant obstacles for the entire population.

In this sense, the recent proposal to review the composition of the basic food basket, aligned with the guidelines of the Food Guides for the Brazilian Population, is positive. The idea is to prioritize fresh foods, such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. However, the challenge lies in establishing pricing strategies that make this basket truly accessible to all Brazilians.

This would be just one of the policies that could be effective in changing the approach to preventing chronic diseases in the country. In addition to presenting solutions, it is essential to create opportunities so that the population can also play an active role in taking care of their health.

This not only in terms of diet, but with regular physical activity, vaccination, and attention to mental well-being.

It’s not enough to just talk about risk factors; It is essential to address the conditions in which the majority of Brazilians live. Education plays an important role in this process, and we must create the conditions so that the adoption of healthy habits is effectively possible.
