Councilors grant Madonna the title of Honorary Citizen of Rio de Janeiro | Madonna in Rio

The award is given to people who were not born in the city, but who at some point in their lives performed activities that contributed significantly to the municipality.

It remains to be seen whether the diva will make room on her agenda to receive the honor – in case, a diploma. It is not necessary to go to Palácio Pedro Ernesto, headquarters of the City Council, to become an Honorary Citizen. The commendation can be delivered anywhereeven at the Copacabana Palace, where Madonna will be staying, or in the dressing room, before the show.

In justifying the project, Cesar and Caiado said that “Madonna Louise Veronica Cicconeoften referred to as the ‘Queen of Pop’, is the most successful female artist of all timeaccording to the Book of Records”.

“Madonna is known for her continuous reinvention and versatility in musical production, composition and visual presentation of his work, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression in commercial music and remaining completely in command of all aspects of his career”, they described.

“His works, which incorporate social, political, sexual and religious themes, generated critical and public acclaim and controversy”, they continued. The councilors stated that the diva “is often cited as an influence on other artists in the conception and production of their arts”.

The authors also highlighted successful albums and appearances in films. “In addition, Madonna is known for her activism and philanthropy, supporting various social causes throughout her career. Her impact transcends music and entertainment, also influencing social and political issues around the world”, they amended.

“His coming to Brazil not only attracts and directly impacts the economic, cultural and tourist growth for our city, but also offers a unique opportunity to celebrate one of the greatest artists of all time.”

Another who came to Rio to sing and was honored by the City Council was Roger Waters, one of the founders of the band Pink Floyd. He received the Pedro Ernesto Medal, the House’s highest honor, on the eve of his show, in October 2023.

The request was made by councilor Monica Benicio (PSOL), who justified it by recognizing the artist’s activism in human rights, against dictatorial regimes and in defense of the Palestinian people.
