Influencer Fabiana Justus, 37, shared this Tuesday (23) in her Instagram stories that the bone marrow donor compatible with her lives abroad, but so far she has not had the chance to meet him.
She clarified that, unlike solid organ transplants, there is no waiting list for a bone marrow transplant. “The solid organ can serve several people, but the bone marrow needs to be compatible with one person,” she said, answering questions on a social network.
The process begins with the donor’s registration, which receives a number in the National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors (Redome). “They test this compatibility with everyone in the system, both in the national and international Redome. In my case, they found a donor outside of Brazil”, he revealed.
“The only information I have is that he is from outside Brazil and is a man. For now I can only know that. Then I will be able to write a letter and possibly meet him, God willing,” he added.
Fabiana detailed the process, explaining that finding a compatible donor requires that he or she be able and willing to donate. “I was praying a lot and my donor, thank God, was completely able and willing to donate. He understood the urgency that my doctors explained in the document and he donated very quickly,” she said.
“Bone marrow transplantation is very specific, so if my donor, for example, had not been called to donate to me, I would probably never be called, because finding a 100% compatible person is very difficult,” he added.
Before entering the system, Fabiana’s family tested her bone marrow compatibility. However, they only had 50% compatibility. “They looked to see if there was a 100% compatible donor, but we had my family’s plan B,” she highlighted.
“You register and wait for a call to possibly save someone’s life, which is really beautiful,” he said.
