Doctor, former BBB Thelma Assis, winner of the 2020 edition, said she was shocked when she arrived in Canoas, in Rio Grande do Sul, to help victims of the floods that have hit the state since the end of April.
“I was in shock. Finding an entire city underwater, more than half of the city underwater… There are places where the water rose 5, 12 meters… It really is very difficult.”
She is in the city accompanied by two other ex-BBBs who are also doctors, Amanda Meirelles and Marcela McGowan.
“The work here has been to help the health professionals here, who are overworked. Many are unable to get around to leave the hospital and end up doubling their journey, others take 3, 4 hours on a journey that previously took 20 minutes.”
Tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul
This Wednesday morning (8), the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul updated the number of deaths to 100 due to the storms hitting the state. The published bulletin also points out that there are 4 other deaths being investigated. Until the publication of this report, the state recorded 128 missing and 372 injured.
When traveling to the state, Amanda shared a series of videos asking for donations and explaining that she traveled to help.
“The biggest impasse was logistics. Some roads were blocked, others were at risk of collapse. Thinking about safety, we were organizing the best way around here,” she said this Monday (6).
