The Slipknot album that Corey Taylor has trouble listening to

The discography of Slipknot was conceived amid a series of conflicts. Especially the albums from the period considered “classic”, between 1999 and 2008. Pressure for success, addictions and creative disagreements were some of the main causes for this.

The vocalist Corey Taylor cannot ignore these problems. Even more so when you listen to the group’s third album, Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). Released in May 2004, the work was responsible for presenting very famous songs such as “Before I Forget”, “Duality” and “Vermilion”but the internal situation was so complicated that the singer had difficulty hearing him.

The revelation was made in an interview with Revolver magazine. In this ocasion, Taylor answered questions sent by fans. One of them wanted to know what stands out when he thinks about the troubled period of production of Vol. 3precisely the artist’s lowest point in relation to his alcoholism.

“Oh God, that was a pivotal moment in my life. I was in such a bad place that I don’t even really remember the first half of recording that album because I was so high the whole time.”

Apart from the personal issue, Corey felt insecure about the more experimental approach adopted on that album. Here, the band moved away from their heavy, nu metal-influenced sound to explore more conventional structures, focusing on melodies and even some acoustic songs.

“What strikes me is that there was a great sense of apprehension even before the album was released. We weren’t sure if anyone would like it, you know? Things only started to change after ‘Duality‘ was released as a single.”

Uncertainties

Even so, Corey Taylor felt apprehensive about Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). The vocalist thought that perhaps not only the public wasn’t ready, but the band itself might not be at the best time to release a bolder album.

“The recording process also left such a bad taste in my mouth that I still have trouble listening to the album to this day. Obviously, a lot of this stems from how I feel about the [produtor] Rick Rubin. For me, [o engenheiro de mixagem] Greg Fidelman was the one who produced that album, because Rubin wasn’t there, no one could bother him.”

Another point highlighted by Taylor it was the presence of “freeloaders” in the band’s inner circle.

“We were definitely in a weird situation because suddenly we weren’t just these Iowa guys, we were ‘the’ Slipknot. And a lot of freeloaders were starting to latch on to us, trying to get their leech hooks in. It was a difficult situation. I remember having songwriting sessions with Paul [Gray, falecido baixista do Slipknot] in his room, and he was struggling with his addictions and stuff, and there I was trying to get sober…”

On the other hand, Corey recognizes that Vol. 3 represents a good artistic moment for Slipknot.

“When I look at all the amazing songs that were on it, it’s crazy. And now, we are opening the shows with ‘Prelude 3.0’ and ‘Blister Exists’, which is an incredible combination. It makes me look at that album with new eyes and think: ‘maybe we did something good here!’. Because at the time I wasn’t completely convinced.”
