‘I realized I was losing my hand’: Pedro Bial gave up an addiction that lasted 7 years after serious illness and traumatic situations

PedroBialone of the biggest names in Brazilian television, made history by commanding ‘BBB‘ for 16 editions. Having held a ‘meeting with generations’ with Tadeu Schmidt in the program ‘Conversation with Bial‘, which he currently presents, the journalist has gone through ups and downs in his personal life.

Always transparent about his experiences, Bial revealed to Veja magazine, a few years ago, moments of tension that made him completely change his lifestyle habits. Compulsory smoker and addicted to alcoholic beverages, the presenter had to choose another path after being diagnosed with pulmonary emphysema.

The disease came together with other traumas experienced with drinkstill in the early 2000s. Pedro Bial, known for his poetic and profound speeches on ‘BBB’, is admittedly a former user of drugs ranging from marijuana, LSD to even cocaine.

The discovery of the disease, however, changed the smallest details of his habits. The presenter had to give up his vices, especially cigarettes, to try to have a better quality of life, focusing on his health.

And so there was a great turnaround for Pedro Bial. But the process wasn’t easy and he even had to hire a psychoanalyst to deal with the trauma of drinking: “I realized I was losing my grip. For four years I drank every day. A lot,” he told Veja.

Regarding the drugs mentioned above, Bial confessed what he experienced: “I saw people getting bogged down, ruining their lives. I drank powder, and today I don’t use anything, not even marijuana.”

Pedro Bial’s new life

The radical change and abandonment of addictions were followed by a ‘new life’ for the presenter. The first step was physical exercise, in which Bial began to dedicate himself in a gym set up in his own home with the help of a personal trainer.

Between running on the beach and cycling, the journalist, who experienced an unusual moment when his hair turned gray, even ventured into the surf with his children.

Pulmonary emphysema, although there is no cure, was treated by Bial. Free from illness, away from drugs, cigarettes and drinking, Pedro Bial, now 66 years old, is an example of resilience and a healthy life.
