The government of Santa Catarina, commanded by the Bolsonarista Jorginho Mello, from PL, expanded the use of satellite internet from Starlink, a company owned by billionaire Elon Musk, in public services in the state. Musk recently had a clash with Minister Alexandre de Moraes, from the STF, and was thus elevated to the position of hero of Bolsonarism.
After using Musk’s internet in a Samu unit in the interior of the state, in the Connected Ambulance project, the Mello government started to use Starlink in communications for Civil Police vehicles and aircraft in remote regions with no signal in the state. The project was presented by the governor on April 29th.
In both cases, the use of Internet by Musk’s company in Santa Catarina is in the experimental phase. The deadline for the end of tests on ambulances is at the beginning of June and on police vehicles, at the end of June.
According to the Santa Catarina government, in this experimental phase, the equipment is used through an “antenna loan protocol”, at no cost to public coffers.
Based on the experience, the results will be evaluated to see if the equipment meets the needs and if there is a need for technical adjustments. If it is considered so, a bidding process will be opened, with competition.
Financial feasibility and investment studies for acquiring the technology will also be carried out, according to Jorginho Mello management.
