According to “Reuters”, William Burns is in Cairo (Egypt) with a Hamas delegation; Negotiations have been taking place since March

A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo (Egypt) this Saturday (May 4, 2024) to negotiate the possibility of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. One of the main agreements of the truce would be the release of Israeli hostages.

According to an informant at Reutersthe director of the CIA (United States Central Intelligence Agency), William Burns, will be present at the meeting. “The results today will be different. We have reached agreement on many points and there are a few points left”, said an Egyptian security source. However, the US agency did not publicly report Burns’ schedule.

Signaling possible progress, Hamas said on Friday (May 3) that it would go to Cairo with a “positive spirit” after studying the latest publicly announced Israeli proposal. Hamas delegations have been going to Egypt since March to try to negotiate a truce with Israel. Despite efforts, the extremist group and the Israeli government have still not been able to reach an agreement to pause the conflict in Gaza.

On Thursday (May 2), Israel reopened the only crossing in the far north of the Gaza Strip. It was the first time that the space was reopened since the start of the conflict, on October 7th.
