After the imbroglio, Globo defined the date on which it will make the full version of the soap opera available Terra Nostra (1999), until then prevented from being shown in the original way it aired, whether in reruns or streaming platforms.
Shown at eight o’clock between September 20, 1999 and June 2, 2000, the soap opera written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa follows the trajectory of young Italians Matteo (Thiago Lacerda) and Giuliana (Ana Paula Arósio), with the backdrop of Italian immigration and its importance in the formation of Brazilian society.
Despite its success, the serial was prevented from being shown in its entirety in recent years. So much so that, in the rerun on Viva, in 2019, the international version of the soap opera was aired, which has only 150 chapters – 71 less than the original.
Globo was prevented from showing Terra Nostra in full
The exhibition took place this way because of a problem involving the copyright of the Terra Nostra soundtrack. This prevented the work from being replayed in its original format on Viva and being made available on Globoplay – in 2020, the plot also arrived on the platform with 150 chapters.
The dispute surrounding the serial became public in 2019, when Globo decided to rerun the soap opera on its pay channel. On that occasion, Viva’s management explained why it would show the edited version for the international market, and not in full, as always happens.
“In the case of Terra Nostra, after the title was selected and the copyright check was carried out, Viva was faced with impediments related to copyright. The version currently on air, with 150 chapters, is the one shown internationally by Globo and the only one available – without harm to the plot”, explained Viva.
End of imbroglio changed everything
The problem involving the copyright of the Terra Nostra soundtrack only had an outcome last year, when the entire issue was resolved and the broadcaster was finally free to make its work available in full.
During participation in CCXP (Comic Con Experience) 2023, held in São Paulo (SP), Globo’s then director of Digital Projects and Paid Channels, Erick Brêtas, revealed that the problem involving the soap opera had been resolved and the plot would have its version complete available.
When will Terra Nostra be back on Globoplay?
After a few months, Globo finally hit the nail on the head and decided when the entirety of Terra Nostra will be available on Globoplay, through Projeto Originalidade, which brings the original version of a soap opera every month.
The 1999 drama written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa will have its 221 chapters available on global streaming on May 27th. The cast also includes names such as Antônio Fagundes, Raul Cortez, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Marcello Anthony, among others.
