Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg has revealed conversations he had with former McLaren boss Andreas Seidl about a place at the British team. The revelation came during an interview with the official Formula 1 website.

Seidl and Hulkenberg are German and have worked together at Porsche for almost ten years, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans together. Years later, paths crossed again.

“In 2020, before the season started, I didn’t know what I was going to do,” Hulkenberg said. “I called Andreas, who was at McLaren at the time. I asked if there was any chance for me, and the answer was straight: ‘Don’t even think about it, it won’t happen’.”

History, however, took a different turn in 2023. Seidl, currently CEO of Sauber Motorsport AG, responsible for the future Audi team from 2026, showed great interest in counting on Hulkenberg.

“This time with the Audi project, a few years later, it was completely different. He was very interested in hiring me,” said the pilot.

The pair will reunite again in 2025 when Hulkenberg joins Sauber after two seasons at Haas. The German cited Seidl as a decisive factor in his move: “He is the big driver behind this. “He is one of those who decide, one of the main names in Audi management. Of course, the invitation came through him, and he is a very direct and sincere guy with me”, concluded the German driver.
