RB is in an intense dispute with Haas for the top of the group of five teams that chase the top teams in Formula 1. With the current competitiveness in F1, smaller teams need to take advantage of any gap to score.

Leading this dispute in the midfield, RB has seven points scored against five for Haas, but the double abandonment in China hindered the chance to extend the advantage. With little difference in performance, Red Bull Racing’s sister team opted to bring updates to Miami, even though it was a Sprint format weekend.

“We will have news in Miami to try to continue leading this balanced group”, said team boss Laurent Mekies, to Motorsport.com. “There are no guarantees. I believe that our competitors will also have updates, and only if you have an impeccable weekend will you get P10.”

Although RB appears to have had a slight speed advantage at times, Haas has been scoring points consistently. Mekies recognizes the difficulty of the dispute.

“We were never sure we had the fastest car among the back five teams,” said Mekies. “We were ahead by half a tenth in Australia and Japan, and lost by a tenth and a half in China. In the race, we were probably even or half a tenth ahead. It’s a full battle.”

“But it’s great exercise for everyone. It’s training for the team to execute perfect weekends, and a strong performance is needed in all aspects. This is the only way to win a point. If any element fails, such as tire management, strategy or anything else, you lose your chance”, concluded Mekies.
