Corinthians’ situation worsened in the South American Championship. At the end of the third round, this Thursday, Timão lost a new position and is out of the qualifying zone for the knockout stage of the tournament.
The squad led by António Oliveira opened the week at the top of Group F, with four points, but was overtaken by Argentinos Juniors (six points), who beat the black and white club 1-0, last Tuesday. However, Nacional, from Paraguay, drew 2-2 with Racing, from Uruguay, caused Corinthians to fall to third placewith the Uruguayans taking second place in the group – see below.
The Parque São Jorge club could return to the top positions in the next round. If Nacional wins, on May 7th, away from home, Timão hopes for a draw between Argentinos Juniors and Racing to take the lead or, in the worst case scenario, second place in the group. In the South American Championship, the first-placed team advances directly to the round of 16, while the second-placed teams compete in a playoff with the third-placed teams from the Libertadores..
The black and white team is going through a delicate moment in the season. In addition to falling in the continental tournament table, Corinthians occupies 18th place in the Brazilian Championship. The recovery could begin next Sunday, against Fluminense. The ball rolls at 4pm, at Neo Química, for the fourth round of the national competition.
