Marrakech (Morocco) – With no player in the top 30 rankings, the ATP 250 in Marrakech was reinforced by two former top 10 players. Currently in the modest 100th and 102nd positions, respectively, the Italian Fabio Fognini and the Belgian David Goffin secured a place in the bracket main event of the tournament played on Moroccan clay after skipping the qualifier.

Also back in Morocco is David Goffin, champion in 2022. Second in qualifying, he got past Frenchman Calvin Hemery in his debut and German Benjamin Hassan in the final round. In this Monday’s match, the former top 7 player also had to react and even saved a match point in the tiebreak of the second set, before closing the game with a score of 2/6, 7/6 (10-8) and 6/3.

Just like Fognini, the Belgian’s debut will be against a Frenchman, in this case the 81st placed in the rankings, Arthur Rinderknech, also in an unprecedented duel on the circuit. In addition to winning the title two years ago, Goffin also competed in the event in 2014, when he had to play in the qualifiers and ended up defeated in the main draw debut.

Two other players who passed the current edition’s qualification and are guaranteed to participate in the tournament are the North American Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, 157th in the world and who defeated the Frenchman Gregoire Barrere by 7/6 (8-6) and 7/6 (7). -5), and also Italian Matteo Gigante, 145th in the ATP, who eliminated German Rudolf Molleker by scores of 7/6 (7-5), 0/6 and 7/6 (7-4).
