Velo Clube took an important step towards returning to the elite of the 2025 Campeonato Paulista by beating Juventus, 1-0, in the first game of the Serie A2 semi-final. The teams faced each other at the Conde Rodolfo Crespi Stadium, on Rua Javari, in São Paulo.

Velo Clube’s goal was scored by striker Caio Mancha. Now, the Rio Claro team is playing for a draw to climb to the first division. If you lose by one goal, the decision goes to penalties. Juventus, on the other hand, needs to win by two goals.

The last (and only) time that Velo Clube participated in Série A1 of the Campeonato Paulista was in 1979. At the time, the team came in last place in the tournament, with five wins, 11 draws and 22 defeats.

Since then, Rubro-Verde has fluctuated between Series A2, A3 and A4. Now, the chance to compete in Paulistão’s elite after 46 years is real. The team will host Juventus in the return duel next Saturday (6/4), at 3:10 pm, at the Benitão stadium, in Rio Claro.

Former Atlético is coach of Velo Clube

Velo Clube’s coach is former player Guilherme Alves, 49 years old, who has on his resume the 2014 Series A3 title with Novorizontino, which today competes in the Paulistão elite and Series B of the Brazilian Championship.

With Guilherme, Velo Clube has a record of seven wins, four draws and four defeats in the second state division. In the first phase, the team advanced in seventh place, with 22 points. In the quarterfinals, they eliminated São José.

Former Atlético striker, Guilherme Alves already has extensive experience as a coach, standing out mainly at Marília, for which he accumulated 117 appearances in several spells. In 2016, the coach led Vila Nova-GO in Série B.

Guilherme at Atlético

As a professional athlete, Guilherme was a striker with excellent finishing. He enjoyed the best phase of his career at Atlético, where he formed a historic duo with Marques and scored 139 goals in 205 games (1999 to 2002 and in 2003).

At Galo, Guilherme won the Campeonato Mineiro in 1999 and 2000, in addition to being runner-up in Brazil in 1999. In the national competition, he scored 28 goals and finished as top scorer.

Part of the black and white fans criticized Guilherme for having played for Cruzeiro in 2004. The striker revealed at Marília also played for São Paulo, Rayo Vallecano (Spain), Grêmio, Vasco, Corinthians, Botafogo and Al-Ittihad (Saudi Arabia).

For the Brazilian team, Guilherme was part of the squad for the 2001 Copa América, in Colombia.

Northwest x Portuguese

In the other semifinal of Series A2, everything was the same between Noroeste and Portuguesa Santista, on Saturday (30/3), in Bauru: 0 to 0. The teams will fight for the place in A1 next Sunday (7/4), at 11:10 am, at the Ulrico Mursa stadium, in Santos.
