A Agrishow, one of the largest agribusiness fairs in the country, begins this Sunday, the 28th, in Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, with a ceremony restricted to 600 guests. And, despite the unease between organizers and the Lula government, the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, is one of those confirmed. The event will open to the public on Monday, the 29th, and runs until Friday, the 3rd.

In this 29th edition, it is estimated that more than 195 thousand people will visit the 520 thousand square meters of the event, where more than 800 brands will be exhibiting their agricultural technological innovations. Agrishow is also expected to generate around R$13.2 billion in business during the five days of the fair.

But, although the event is recognized for being the stage for presentations of new technologies for agribusiness, in recent years, it has also been the site of partisan political demonstrations that generated wear and tear.

Conflict with the Lula government

In the 2023 edition, for example, Agrishow organizers suggested that Fávaro attend the second day of the fair, as former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) would be at the inauguration. The minister felt “uninvited” and warned that he would not go to the event.

The discourtesy towards Fávaro caused embarrassment in the government. Representatives of entities organizing the event apologized to the minister, but were unable to reverse the discomfort caused by the uninvitation. The decision had repercussions in the days that followed. Banco do Brasil, for example, announced that it would withdraw its sponsorship of the fair.

Chat with Ciro Gomes

In 2022, Agrishow was also the site of another episode of malaise. The then pre-candidate for President of the Republic Ciro Gomes (PDT) clashed with Bolsonaro supporters. As he walked through the stands, he was harassed. Ciro reacted to the provocations by calling the attackers “little Nazis”.

“There was no arguing. Half a dozen little Nazis [gritaram] ‘Northeastern, Ceará, go away. Bolsonaro, myth'”, he said at a press conference. After what happened, Ciro took to social media to regret having acted vehemently.

In a note, published on the same day as the incident, the politician’s office said that he was insulted and suffered attempts at physical aggression by Bolsonarista militants. “The attackers acted with violence and with deep prejudice against people from the Northeast, attacking their origins from Ceará with a strong racist connotation.”

In 2020 and 2021, Agrishow was not held due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Strategy for 2024

To avoid embarrassments such as those mentioned, Agrishow 2024 will be attended by both minister Carlos Fávaro and former president Jair Bolsonarobut on different days.

Fávaro participates in the opening ceremony of the fair, on Sunday, 28, and Bolsonaro participates in the opening to the general public this Monday, alongside the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans).
