Increase in closed institutions occurs after the strike movement rejected the Lula (PT) government’s proposal. Representatives of the MEC (Ministry of Education) and the Management and Innovation department presented, last week, a proposal for a 9% increase for teachers and 9.5% for civil servants in 2025 — thus keeping the increase for that year at 0% . For 2026, it would be 3.5% for both categories.

Categories defined the meeting with the government as “disappointing”. “The proposal was so offensive to our expectations that the strike grew, several campuses that had not joined now joined,” said Lobão, who is also a mathematics professor at IFPB (Federal Institute of Paraíba).

Andifes (an association that brings together the rectors of federal universities) told the reporter that 22 institutions are currently on strike. Another 12 have an approved strike indication and 16 have already decided that they will not join. In 17 universities there will still be an assembly to decide on the movement, says the group.

UOL contacted the MEC, who said he had forwarded the questions to the MGI (Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services). There were no responses until the publication of this text.

The strike began on April 2nd by teachers, but gained strength on April 15th. The technical-administrative category began the strike last month, on March 18.

What they said

Education is said in government speeches as something that is a priority, but they pose many difficulties in meeting our demands.
