Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden, was in Brazil to promote his solo band’s album “The Mandrake Project”, and took the opportunity to chat with Pedro Bial, on the program Conversa com Bial. During the conversation, he remembered his first meeting with Ian Gillan, lead singer of Deep Purple. The meeting took place when he was still in the band Samson, before Iron Maiden, and was quite remarkable.

“I was in a band called Samson, and he was my big hero, idol and everything, when I was 18 or 19. I had recorded my first album in a studio with them and we were listening to the recordings. The bass player in Ian Gillan’s solo band was our producer, so we were all there together. I don’t smoke, but everyone in Samson smoked a lot of weed, and it was that weird thing you put in tobacco… hashish. we had a few beers and we went down to listen to the album and they were playing this thing and gave it to me”, recalled Bruce, who said he was surprised by the arrival of Ian Gillan afterwards, who listened to the recordings and asked who the singer was.

Bruce had time to identify himself as the singer on the album, hear some compliments from Ian and run out to vomit in the bathroom. “I ran out and was on the toilet with my head stuck there for about forty minutes, until he came looking for me and called me. He took me out, wiped the vomit off my face, put me in a taxi and sent me home. He It reminds me of that story every time we meet,” he said.
