Kerry King was shocked that no band invited him after Slayer broke up

At the end of 2019, Slayer played its last show, retiring a 38-year career with two major shows that were attended by celebrities such as musicians Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Scott Ian (Anthrax), King Diamond (Mercyful Fate), Post Malone and actor Jason Momoa. Although he was moving away from colleagues Tom Araya (vocals), Paul Bostaph (drums) and Gary Holt (guitar), guitarist Kerry King was already planning his next steps.

It was no coincidence that in his farewell shows the musician used picks with the message “Reborn 2020”. “I knew what my future would be and I knew what that future would sound like. I just hadn’t anticipated a pandemic putting that future on hold for so long,” said the musician in conversation with Metal Hammer magazine. On May 17th, the world will discover “From Hell I Rise”, the long-awaited first solo album by Kerry King, who is accompanied by an all-star team formed by vocalist Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), guitarist Phil Demmel (Machine Head ), Kyle Sanders (ex-Hellyeah), and his Slayer bandmate, drummer Paul Bostaph.

In addition to the pandemic, Kerry King was surprised by Tom Araya’s decision to return with Slayer for a series of shows, a timing that seems strange to say the least, with his solo album approaching. Before interviewing the musician, the magazine was warned that it could not address Slayer’s return in the interview.

Although he avoided talking about the Slayer reunion, Kerry King admitted he was “a little surprised” not to receive even an invitation to join another band after the first rumors of Slayer’s retirement were confirmed. “I have a reputation! I’m not bad! I thought maybe Mercyful Fate would come knocking on my door, but no. I thought, ‘What the hell is going on here?'”

Kerry luckily got Mark Osegueda as lead singer for his band, which was actually who he wanted, but admitted to having talked to Phil Anselmo (Pantera). “He listened to some material, but frankly that was it. We talked, we exchanged emails, texts, here and there, he’s a difficult guy to get on the phone, a difficult guy to get answers for,” he explained.
