First single from Nightwish’s new album is almost 10 minutes long

Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish announced that their next studio album, titled “Yesterwynde”, will be released on September 20, 2024. In an interview with Kerrang magazine, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen spoke about “Perfume Of The Timeless”, the first single from “Yesterwynde”, which is scheduled for release on May 21st.

According to Tuomas, who is the leader of Nightwish, “Perfume Of The Timeless” is almost ten minutes long, which apparently pleased the people at Nuclear Blast Records.

“When we first met with Nuclear Blast, to talk about the new album and the singles, I told them that the first single would be a song called ‘Perfume Of The Timeless’, eight and a half minutes long, and the chorus comes in at 3:30. And they said: ‘Perfect'”, said the keyboardist.

“I think it has to do with the fact that we have a long legacy. You know, we can do whatever we want, and I do, but the fact that we can do that says something, when I heard that for Spotify it’s good that the vocals start after 15 seconds, or people will skip, they have no more attention span”, added Tuomas, who also explained the meaning behind Nightwish’s next studio album.

“It’s a made-up word. There’s this thing called The Dictionary Of Obscure Sorrows. It gave me the idea that if you don’t have an English word to describe a certain emotion, you can create your own . This particular dictionary is dedicated to that feeling of longing for a place you’ve never been. What is that feeling? And it was something strange, I remember. And this album was born from a certain feeling that I felt very strongly, but not. I couldn’t find a word in human language to describe it. So I started talking to Troy. [Donockley, multi-instrumentista] and I asked, ‘Should we create a new word? Does this make any sense to you?’. And he said, ‘Yes, that’s a brilliant idea. What did you have in mind?’. It was something like time, memories in black and white, sepia, and I said: ‘something from yesterday’. Then he replied, ‘How about Yesterwynde?’ It is perfect! But yeah, it’s just a made-up word to describe the album’s theme.”

“Yesterwynde” is the successor to “Human. :II: Nature.”, released in April 2020.
