Metal com Batata interviewed Felipe Andreoli, bassist of Angra to talk about the band’s participation in the Summer Brezze Festival which will take place on the 26th, 27th and 28th of April in São Paulo.

The interview was carried out by one of our partners, guitarist Carlos Lichman, who currently lives in Poland, and who conducted it masterfully.

The first question was what can the public expect differently from this Angra performance at Summer Breeze in relation to the shows that have already been taking place on the “Cycles of Pain” album tour?

Felipe Andreoli initially mentioned that the band is very happy because Summer Breeze, one of the most important festivals in Europe, is consolidating itself in Brazil, and that São Paulo needed an event of this magnitude.

Regarding Angra’s shows, as the tour had already started last year in Brazil, the band is transforming its repertoire so that the public can watch a different show than what was being performed previously. He mentioned that the changes will begin at the shows in Porto Alegre and Curitiba this weekend (12/04 in Porto Alegre and 13/04 in Curitiba).

Regarding the show at Summer Breeze, Felipe mentioned that Angra will select the best of its repertoire, as performing at festivals requires greater energy, a more powerful set, and as the show time is reduced, the message has to be given differently.

In the next question Andreoli was asked about the process of composing the band’s songs; How do they work, where does so much inspiration come from, so many ideas to compose such brilliant things?

Felipe Andreoli mentioned that the band’s first premise is to be free when composing without placing pre-determinations, where in the composition process they throw everything on the table and then make a filter to see what Angra sounds like and what doesn’t. He also mentions that the band has had the same lineup for eight years and that everyone already knows what Angra is.

But when the band gets together to jam and experiment, then the ideas go anywhere and it is at this moment that the band expands its style to unexpected places. This makes Angra create different work, bringing new ideas and new influences, but always worrying about sounding like Angra.

Afterwards Felipe was asked about his way of playing, if he plays more what the song asks for or if he likes to create bass lines independent of the song he is playing?

Felipe Andreoli mentions that it depends on what the song requires, if it’s simple he does it simple, if it’s to double the guitar he doubles it, or if it’s a different stop he does it as it has to be done. He mentions that the important thing in the first place is to play the role of the bassist, but if he has space to invent different things, he will create them. He mentions that it is often tempting for the musician to create a lot of impressive things to show what he knows how to do, thus leaving the music aside, but that he always tries to ensure that it is musical, consistent with what the music asks for. .

Afterwards, Felipe Andreoli was asked about his evolution in music, if Felipe from before, when he joined Angra at the age of 20, would he have imagined that Felipe would reach his current level in music?

Felipe mentioned being privileged to have fulfilled his teenage dream of being able to make a living from music, playing metal, having his band, traveling the world, recording and releasing albums. And the Felipe of 2000 would be very happy to see that this is what he does with his life, with everything he has achieved in life with music, pursuing this passion and making it his livelihood.

Felipe also mentioned that many ask him if it is not his dream to play in a bigger, international band; But according to him, his objective is to continue doing what he does, in an increasingly better way, always seeking to evolve, improve, and that this journey of greatness no longer belongs to him.

Finally, he also mentioned having played in 2022 with Mike Portnoy, who is a great hero to him, and that this happened naturally, without planning and without having fought to make it happen, being just the result of his work, connections and friendships he made throughout his life.

Felipe Andreoli was asked if there was a show at the Summer Breeze Festival that he would like to attend?

Felipe mentioned that he was dying to watch the “Jelusick” show, but unfortunately he wouldn’t be able to watch it as they will play at the same time as Angra. That he and Dino Jelusick (lead singer of the band) will be able to meet for the first time, after a few years they have been talking (Dino made a special appearance on Felipe Andreoli’s solo album, in addition to playing in the band that Bruno Valverde is part of, which is Whom Gods Destroy).

Felipe Andreoli was asked about the possibility of releasing a new solo album?

Felipe mentions that he doesn’t have anything prepared, but that he is always collecting excerpts, ideas that keep coming up, that he always records records for the future, but that he has no plans to do so soon, as he doesn’t see enough time to do everything he needs, besides of being a father, a husband and having a social life without going crazy. But in the end he mentions that next year it might be possible to take some time to work on it, as the process of composing and producing the album “Resonance” was very enjoyable.

Finally he was asked about tour dates in Europe, as according to Angra’s official page there were only two concert dates planned?

Felipe mentioned that their agency in Europe is trying new dates because there were two weeks between the festival in Portugal and Slovakia and that they would not be able to keep this period idle, mainly due to the gigantic cost; but there are already some things well underway and other negotiations. Other than that, they should return to Europe in October and November for another 15 shows.
