What did Bruce Dickinson think of Paul Di’Anno singing live with Iron Maiden?

In the 80s, with Bruce Dickinson as lead singer, Iron Maiden became known worldwide as one of the greatest exponents of British metal. It wasn’t until he joined the band that it produced its most devastating sequence of albums: “The Number of the Beast” (1982), “Piece of Mind” (1983), “Powerslave” (1984), “Live After Death” ( 1985) and “Somewhere in Time” (1986).

Before that, however, Maiden’s first two albums — “Iron Maiden” (1980) and “Killers” (1981) — had Paul Di’Anno as lead singer.

As published by Blabbermouth, in an interview with Joel McIver in the most recent issue of Record Collector magazine, Dickinson recalled the day he met Iron Maiden (when he was still the lead singer of Samson).

“The first time I saw the [Iron] Maiden was at the old Music Machine in Camden. Samson [minha banda na época] was the main attraction because it was our manager who paid for the show and said: ‘We want first place’ — even though we didn’t deserve it.”

“[Que a gente não merecia] It was obvious when Maiden came in because the place was packed. I had heard rumors about how good they were and thought I’d better check them out. When they walked in, I thought, ‘I’ve never seen Deep Purple before. [ao vivo]but that must be what it was like to see Deep Purple at their peak, going broke.”

Then, he recalled his first impression of Paul Di’Anno’s vocals: “He [Paul Di’Anno] It was ok, but he didn’t have much vocal range — for me, his voice had already reached its maximum. I immediately saw what the rest of the band could do, and I remember thinking ‘Damn, I would love to be fronting this band!’ And as soon as they finished playing, everyone who was there left and we played for about three people.”
