Widely covered in popular culture, lying has even been a central theme in fairy tales, such as Pinocchio. In Brazil, April Fools’ Day is celebrated this Monday (1st) and serves as a justification for people to play “pranks” on family, friends and co-workers. Despite being special, few people know when the date came about or why it is celebrated on April 1st.

How did April Fools Day come about?

There is no consensus among historians about the origin of April Fools’ Day, but one hypothesis is that the date emerged as a way of mocking those who were against changing the time count from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. This is because, in the first calendar, the year began on Easter and not on January 1st, so people who refused to accept the new time count were nicknamed ‘April fools’. In the English language, April Fool’s Day is called “Fool’s Day”.

Another theory accepted in Brazil is that the day gained national popularity when a Minas Gerais newspaper, “A Mentira”, published on April 1, 1828 the false news that Dom Pedro 1° had died.
