Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder starred in James Mangold’s Girl, Interrupted (1999), a film that earned Jolie an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. But the atmosphere behind the scenes of the production was not at all friendly, according to Elisabeth Moss.

Because of the characters, a tense atmosphere was created between Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryde during the filming of Girl, Interrupted, dividing the cast into two groups, as Elisabeth Moss explained to Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast.

There were two types of camps. There was Camp Winona Ryder and Camp Angelina Jolie… Off camera, but based on what was on camera, based on the script. I was at Camp Winona Ryder. Angelina Jolie’s camp was really cool. I was intimidated by Angelina Jolie’s camp. I didn’t think about being able to be in that camp

“I’ve spoken to Angelina since then and she’s lovely, but at the time it was incredibly intimidating.”Moss recalled about her time on Girl, Interrupted. “I never brought it up. I’m sure she would have no idea what I was talking about anyway. I definitely wasn’t cool enough to be at her camp.”.

For Elisabeth Moss, the film was “an incredible experience”. “I was 15 or 16. My mom was still with me going to the set. I was with all these movie stars. Winona Ryder! Angelina Jolie! Clea DuVall! Brittany Murphy! This incredible cast of women. It was like falling into the Wizard of Oz. I was so impressed with my surroundings and working with Winona and Angelina, and they were so different and interesting.”.

In Girl, Interrupted, after a session with a psychoanalyst she’s never met before, Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder) is diagnosed as suffering from “Uncertain Order of Personality” – an affliction with symptoms so ambiguous that any teenage girl could fall under it. Sent to a psychiatric hospital, she discovers a new world, full of seductive and disturbed young girls. Among them is Lisa (Angelina Jolie), a charming sociopath who organizes an escape. The film is available on Netflix.
