Known as one of the biggest references for film ratings on the internet, the website Rotten Tomatoes revealed this week its ranking of the 100 best feature films of all time. According to the website, the selection was based on issues such as critical approval, audience ratings and some editorial metrics.

The big winner ended up being Los Angeles – Forbidden City (LA Confidental)directed by Custis Hanson and released in 1997. Starring Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kim Bassinger, James Cromwell and Danny Devito, it tells how the Los Angeles police helped cover up scandals involving celebrities during the 1950s.

An adaptation of a book by James Ellroy, the film won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay and best supporting actress for Kim Bassinger — who received a Golden Globe for the same role. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has 99% critical approval and 94% approval among more than 100 thousand public reviews.

Rotten Tomatoes explains that, to make the list, it was not enough for a film to have pleased both the public and the audience. The site also took into account the popularity of each title, which means that it heavily weighed the total number of reviews associated with each of them.

Furthermore, the year of consideration of the films was also taken into account. “An editorial review was taken to refine the final list, which included minimum thresholds for each of these data points.”, explains the page.
