A great classic from 1997 marked the history of the slasher subgenre.

I Know What You Did Last Summer, is definitely one of the most iconic slashers in cinema. Launched with all the charm of 90s horror, the production was directed by Jim Gillespie, starring names like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe.

Despite all the success generated by the film, what many don’t know is that one of its most memorable scenes was created and directed – that’s right – by a child. At a certain point in the plot, Love Hewitt’s character despairs when she believes she is being chased by a murderer, starting to scream at the top of her lungs: “What are you waiting for?!”

The revelation came through the words of the actress herself, who during a 2018 interview with US Weekly, stated:

“This scene was directed by a boy who won a contest to create a moment for the film, and it became the most important part of the production.”

For those who don’t remember, I Know What You Did Last Summer (in the original) is set in a coastal town, telling the story of four teenagers who, unintentionally, run over and kill a stranger. Afraid of the consequences, they decide to get rid of the body, throwing it into the sea. The lives of each of the young people take different paths, but a year later, they begin to deal with a killer who claims to know about the accident.

Responsible for massive hype in the 1990s, the franchise also gained two more sequels: I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) and I Will Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006). In 2021, the saga also premiered a series, but it was canceled after low ratings.
