During the first three films, Daniel Radcliffe felt very intimidated by Alan Rickman, especially his voice!
The Harry Potter actor was very afraid of Severus Snape’s interpreter! As a podcast guest Happy Sad Confused (via Variety), Daniel Radcliffe reacted to a tribute paid to him by Alan Rickman in 2015. After thanking the podcast host for showing him these images, he recalled his collaboration with the actor who played Severus Snape alongside him in the eight Harry Potter movies:
I felt very intimidated by Alan Rickman. How can you not feel intimidated by that voice?
“Even hearing that voice, you almost forget it’s so deep until it resonates inside you. I felt very intimidated by him in the first three films. He terrified me and I thought ‘this guy hates me’. Then with the time, he saw what I really wanted to do [esse trabalho] and do it well.”
Time brought them together
But Alan Rickman ended up approaching Daniel Radcliffe, who was reassured by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and then in private, a few years after the end of the magical saga:
“He cut short his vacation in Canada to come see me perform in Equus. When he was alive, he watched every play I did. He’d come see me afterwards and we’d talk about it. He was one of the first people to say, ‘You should to have a vocal coach and be interested in all of this.’ I was very lucky.”
Alan Rickman died in January 2016, aged 69. He had won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his role as Rasputin in the miniseries Rasputin.
