The king of terror makes it clear that his choice “may surprise you”.
Writer Stephen King has no problem praising the films he likes, but ultimately, only one can be his favorite. Well, this is a fact that is already known, and many will be surprised to learn that it is not a horror film.
“This might surprise you”
It was in 2017 that the author of The Shining took a risk and chose The Train of Fear as his favorite film of all time. Directed by William Friedkin, it is a new version of the novel that already served as the basis for the excellent The Wages of Fear, but King makes it very clear which version is his favorite:
“My favorite film of all time – this may surprise you – is The Fear Train, William Friedkin’s remake of The Wages of Fear, by the great Henri-Georges Clouzot. Some will say Clouzot’s film is better, but I disagree.”

It’s understandable why King likes Friedkin’s version better. The Train of Fear is officially an adaptation of the original novel by Georges Arnaud and not the extraordinary film starring Yves Montand in 1952.
The Fear Train tells how a group of men with bad luck in life receive a mission worthy of Ethan Hunt: they will have to use two trucks in very unlikely conditions to transport six boxes of a highly unstable explosive through the jungle. The perfect recipe for disaster.
In fact, a new adaptation of Arnaud’s novel was released on Netflix – although the official reference is Clouzot’s film. The French feature film, The Wages of Fear is directed by Julien Leclercq and stars Franck Gastambide.
