Canola has been advancing on the fields of the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul in recent years. In the municipalities covered by Emater/RS-Ascar, in the administrative region of Santa Rosa, compared to last year, there was an increase of 22% in the area, which reached more than 24,500 hectares in 2022.

The regional manager of Emater/RS-Ascar José Vanderlei Waschburger highlights that, with this, the region has become the main producer of the oilseed in the state and the extension workers are attentive to the flowering stages, grain filling and harvest point at which it is most crops.

The rapid advance of canola in the region can be exemplified with the municipality of Giruá. In 2018, the area was 1,600 hectares, advancing to 2,000 ha in 2019 and 3,000 ha in 2020. Last year, 3,600 ha were cultivated and in 2022 it is present in 4,500 ha of the municipality.

Sete de Setembro is another example of a municipality that has noticed the advance of culture. In 2018, the cultivated area was 150 ha, increasing to 300 ha, in 2019, 500 ha, in 2020, 800 ha, in 2021, and reaching 1,000 hectares this year.

The main benefits pointed out by the producers, according to the extensionist of Emater/RS-Ascar of Sete de Setembro, Irineu Kapelinski, refer to the better control of weeds in relation to other cultures, increase in the productivity of the cultures implanted in the succession in the next winter and, mainly, the opportunity to implement a winter crop with economic return, following with corn in succession.

The canola crop is an interesting alternative in the crop rotation system, with economic return. By having its cultivation recommended by zoning, it allows farmers to finance the crop with agricultural insurance. “Another benefit is that if the crop is implemented at the beginning of April, it allows the planting of corn in succession in the month of August, which reduces the risk of losses in the summer crop, when cultivated at the beginning of the recommended period”, emphasizes Kapelinski .

According to the Conjunctural Newsletter produced and released this Thursday (09/01) by Emater/RS-Ascar, in the Santa Rosa region, 45% of canola crops are in flowering, 42% in grain filling, 11% are with mature grains and 2% at the beginning of harvest.

In the phytosanitary aspect, the presence of moths on the plants was observed in part of the crops, but due to the full flowering and the large presence of bees, the option was not to apply insecticides to preserve the bees and the greater pollination, which should result in grains better formed and with greater mass. In recent days it was also possible to verify that the frosts of August 19 and 20 did not cause significant damage to the crops.

In the Emater/RS-Ascar region of Ijuí, small signs of damage caused by frost were identified in crops located in the lowest parts of the topography, but without representing significant losses to the productive potential. The crops showed an aspect of greater uniformity as the flowering and silique formation stages advanced.

In Santa Maria, 33% of the crops are in vegetative development, 50% in flowering, and 17% in grain filling. At Soledade, which reached the proportion of 85% of the cultivated area, it is in the flowering phase. The remaining 15% are in vegetative development. The general appearance of the crops and the phytosanitary state are considered adequate.

The estimate of canola cultivation in the state for the 2022 crop is 48,457 hectares. The estimated productivity remains at 1,885 kg/ha.

Wheat – The estimate of wheat cultivation in the state for the 2022 crop is 1,413,763 hectares. The estimated productivity remains at 2,822 kg/ha. The vegetative development phase predominates, with 78% of the crops. However, the culture is rapidly evolving towards the reproductive stages, which already total 22% of the implanted area.

In the last week, the crops acquired a darker green hue and the stems became more vigorous as a result of the greater insolation and the increase in the period of luminosity. It was also possible to deepen the analysis of damage caused by the frosts that occurred on August 19 and 20, and symptoms were only found in small areas of lower topography and in crops that are in bloom. However, considering the dimension and intensity of the symptoms, it can be affirmed that the productive potential of the culture was not harmed.

Barley – The estimate of barley cultivation in the state for the 2022 crop is 36,727 hectares. The estimated productivity remains at 2,958 kg/ha.

white oats – The estimate of white oat cultivation in the state for the 2022 crop is 392,507 hectares. The estimated productivity remains at 2,217 kg/ha.
