Alagoas continues to advance in gender parity. After the State was the first Government in Brazil to have a female majority in the secretariat and in leadership positions, now the Military Police of Alagoas has its first woman on the staff of General Staff Officers in a position in the High Command of the Corporation. The General Commander of the PM, Colonel Paulo Amorim, appointed Lieutenant Colonel Josiene Lima as the Institution’s Director of Social Communication.

The senior officer continues to make history in the Military Police. She was the first woman to command the Highway Police Battalion (BPRv) and the 5th Battalion, a Unit that covers policing in the Benedito Bentes neighborhood and region – now becomes the first woman to join the Corporation’s High Command.

“Joining the High Command, as the first Combatant Officer in this position, goes beyond holding a position, it represents a remarkable and exciting achievement in my career and an important legacy for the officers who will come next. Every step, every challenge faced along the way, prepared me for this unique and special moment. I deeply believe in the power of female strength and boldness to overcome obstacles and inspire other women”, emphasized the lieutenant colonel.

The Social Communication Directorate was created through government decree 93,446, which established the new basic organization of PM/AL. DCS is responsible for managing the Institution’s internal and external communications, marketing, ceremonies and events.

For the general commander of the PM, Paulo Amorim, having a woman in the High Command is a source of pride and recognition. “Our barracks is full of great women. They are officers and enlisted men committed to the smooth running of the corporation, highly qualified and committed to Public Security in Alagoas,” he highlighted.

Josiene Lima, the professional and the woman

Born in Penedo, Lieutenant Colonel Josiene Lima joined the PM-AL on March 5, 2001, took the Officer Training Course at the Arnon de Mello Military Police Academy (APMSAM) and was declared an aspiring officer on 12 December 2003. He completed a professional master’s degree in Police Sciences of Security and Public Order in the Officers’ Improvement Course at the Academia do Barro Branco of the PM of the State of São Paulo.

She has a degree in Public Relations from the Federal University of Alagoas (Ufal); specialist in Business Communication from the Maceió Higher Education Center; in Communication Management and Institutional Marketing from Universidade Castelo Branco; in Social Communication and Pedagogical Coordination, both from the Center for Advanced Studies of the Brazilian Army. She was Head of the Public Relations and Social Actions Unit of the PM-AL Communications Office, commander of the School Police Battalion and the first woman to command the BPRv and the 5th BPM; served in the ceremonial of the Court of Justice of Alagoas, was Director of the Technical Division of the Military Police College, deputy commander and Head of the Technical Teaching Section of the Center for Training and Improvement of Praça, Director of the Technical Division of APMSAM and head of the 4th Section of the General Staff.

Women in PM/AL

Currently, the Institution has 1,304 women serving on active duty, among officers and enlisted personnel. This total represents 16.88% of the total workforce. The first step in the trajectory of the female figure in the PM of Alagoas was in 1988. The pioneers to the officer position were sent to qualify in the states of Pernambuco and Minas Gerais, returning in 1990 to carry out their functions in public security. At the time, there was still no Police Academy in Alagoas. In 1989, a group of 35 women completed the first Female Soldier Training Course and another 11 warriors completed the Female Sergeant Training Course. It was the first time that courses in this format took place in Alagoas — becoming a milestone in the history of the Corporation.
