PHOTOS: building on Avenida Francisco Bicalho is imploded | Rio de Janeiro

One of the buildings of the former Clube dos Porttuários, on Avenida Francisco Bicalho, Port Region of Rio, was imploded this Sunday morning (28).

According to Rio City Hall, this is another stage in a series of demolitions of properties on the avenue that began last month.

The demolitions are part of the Porto Maravilha Urban Operation. The demolitions are part of City Hall’s efforts to amplify the development of the Port Region, creating a positive spiral of urban occupation towards the São Cristóvão neighborhood.

The demolished property occupied more than 30 thousand m² and had been abandoned for more than 10 years. It took 75 kilos of explosives distributed in 554 points to bring down the structure.

Since the end of March, City Hall has begun demolishing other unoccupied properties on the Avenida Francisco Bicalho axis, work that should continue over the next few months.
