247 – The Free Liberal Group and the Ranking of Politicians, organizations that monitor and evaluate the performance of parliamentarians, expressed opposition to the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) of the Quinquennium. If approved, the Quinquennium PEC will result in automatic increases of 5% in the salaries of judges, prosecutors and other careers in the legal field every five years. The cost of the measure, defended by the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), is estimated by the government at R$40 billion.

According to the Panel column, from Folha de S. Paulo, the entities highlighted in a joint note the disparity between the salaries of these categories and the average of the Brazilian population. Currently, the average monthly cost per judge is R$69,800, including salaries, compensation and other benefits. In comparison, the average per capita income of Brazilians in 2023 was R$1,848, according to data from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

“These numbers highlight the disparity between the earnings of the civil service elite and the average population: magistrates already receive more than 37 times the average income of the citizen who finances their income”, said Deborah Bizarria, economist and coordinator of Public Policies at Livres .

In addition to the note, the entities launched an online petition against the amendment, aiming to mobilize civil society to oppose this measure that would further increase wage inequality in the country.
