Minas Gerais celebrates Pork Day

Did you know that on April 30th (Tuesday), the Minas Gerais Pork Day? The date was established by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Minas Gerais (ALMG) through LAW 21125, of 01/03/2014, with the aim of valuing the pork production chain and its economic, social and cultural representation in the State.

On the same date, the anniversary of Association of Pig Farmers of the State of Minas Gerais (ASEMG)which this year celebrates 52 years of activity.

In Minas, this is a protein that is present in everyday life and in moments of celebration, it is part of life and local food culture, not by chance, it stars among our traditional and globally recognized dishes: crackling, suckling pig , ribs with canjiquinha, loin with tutu, belly with crackling among many others and this whole scenario takes us to first place in the ranking of pork consumption in Brazil.

According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2023, the estimate is that each miner will consume 27.1 kg per capita.

Minas Gerais is not only a reference in consumption, but also in pork production. According to IBGE, we are the fourth largest pig producer in Brazil, with emphasis on the regions of Triângulo Mineiro, Vale do Piranga, Central-West Minas Gerais and Southern Minas Gerais.

In 2023, 5.3 million tons of meat were sold. For the president of the association, João Carlos Bretas Leite, Minas is a case in point in terms of consumption and quality of production and we are known worldwide for these achievements. It is very gratifying to guarantee healthy protein, at a fair price and with unparalleled flavor on the miners’ tables and to know that it is part of the daily lives and history of these people,” he said.

In addition to guaranteeing healthy and tasty meat to Minas Gerais consumers, the Association that represents these producers intends to provide tips on the best and tastiest ways of preparing protein, which is why a few years ago it created the Cooking with ASEMG project, get to know the project:

Cooking with ASEMG: Pork Edition is better:

The Association of Pig Farmers of the State of Minas Gerais (ASEMG)launched this April the fourth edition of the project “Cooking with ASEMG”, which brings the theme: “With Pork it’s better”. A series of recipes will be presented, traditional in Brazilian cuisine, but with substitutions that bring much more flavor to the dishes. They will contain pork instead of other traditionally known proteins.

Recipes like pork stroganoff, pork sausage and much more. The president of ASEMG João Carlos Bretas Leite says: “We are in the fourth edition of the project, which comes each year bringing new things and surprising everyone by showing how versatile our protein is. The recipes are available on our Instagram (@asemg_mg), easy and very tasty recipes.” commented the president.

The Association of Pig Farmers of the State of Minas Gerais (ASEMG) was created on April 30, 1972 with the aim of representing the pig farming class in the state and has been fulfilling this role since then.
