The Organization of Cooperatives of Paraná (Ocepar) and the State Government, through the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply, began this Thursday (25), during the 1st Bean Forum, held in Curitiba, a study to make Paraná beans also an export product. Paraná is the main national producer, with a forecast of 946 thousand tons this year. Production basically serves the domestic market, but research shows that there is a reduction in consumption, which is currently around 14 kilos per person per year, with a downward trend. Seal will recognize the excellence of rural unions in Paraná Gata travels more than 70 km under a truck and wins over police According to the president of Ocepar, José Roberto Ricken, who proposed the meeting with Seab, in other commodities production responds to national demand and International. “In beans, the commercial part is still old, we produce and then go out to sell. We need an adequate marketing and even export strategy to have a more planned culture in the field,” he said. According to him, cooperatives are highly interested in expanding production, but need to establish a strategy similar to that for soybeans and corn. “It’s a product that’s on the table every day and we need to expand the market,” he said.Photo: Seab-PR

The Secretary of Agriculture and Supply, Norberto Ortigara, considered that the imbalance observed between demand and supply has caused fluctuations in the prices paid to producers. He highlighted research carried out mainly by the Institute of Rural Development-Iapar-Emater (IDR-Paraná) to develop a product that is suitable for the international market. According to him, it has already been possible to develop materials resistant to pests and diseases and with shorter production cycles, reducing from 90 to 68 days, or even less. There has also been advancement in technology, with the development of more upright plants that help with mechanized harvesting, and in logistics, improving drying and storage. “The challenge is to find types of products that stimulate our ability to supply the international market,” said Ortigara. “That’s why this initiative to debate this issue is very relevant, even to calibrate scientific research into beans and pulse alternatives (dry legumes).” One of the proposals put forward by the secretary to help producers make decisions is to have climate risk zoning increasingly focused on microenvironments, with a view to greater assertiveness in production and safety. “Beans and pulses are another opportunity to be present in the world, but we need to study and adapt to consumption to ensure firm demand,” he said. The Director of Research at IDR-Paraná, Vânia Moda Cirino, highlighted that the institute has already developed around 40 bean cultivars, the latest of which is IPR-Cardeal, which has red beans that maintain their color even after cooking. It is a cultivar studied according to the profile of the international market, as some countries sell the product pre-cooked in jars, ensuring good presentation. “We have structured a chain of beans aimed at export and cooperatives are important in this process”, stated Cirino.

HARVEST – The head of the Department of Rural Economy (Deral), Marcelo Garrido, presented estimates of the Paraná bean harvest at the meeting. The three harvests are expected to deliver 946 thousand tons of product this year, with a productivity of 1,800 kilos per hectare. As a result, Paraná will be responsible for 29% of national production. Even higher than the 682 tons of the previous cycle, production in Paraná will still be lower than the initial estimate made by producers in the middle of last year, when they planned planting. According to Garrido, the weather conditions and strong disease pressure did not allow the potential to be reached, and there was also a loss to the quality of the beans, mainly in the Southwest region of the State. “Even so, Paraná will have good availability of beans from May onwards”, he stated.
