President of the Chamber says he will wait for the approval of tax regulations to choose the name he will support
The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), stated this Thursday (April 25, 2024) that he intends to support a successor for the command of Casa Baixa who has the approval of PL and PT. The congressman said, however, that he will announce the name after the approval of the main tax reform regulatory project.
“I just don’t think it’s fair to anticipate a subject that will divide us, or may not add up to anything now, to the detriment of so many important matters as we have”said Lira in an interview with GloboNews.
According to the congressman, he was elected to the position with the support of the parties of former president Jair Bolsonaro and current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and “this is a situation” that will always “to work”.
“I will seek to unite as many parties as I can for this”said the president of the Chamber.
Elections for the presidency of the Chamber and Senate will be held in 2025. Lira and Pacheco, who were re-elected last year, cannot run.
LIRA, LULA AND SUCCESSION IN THE CHAMBER
Lira had a surprise meeting on Sunday (21 April) with Lula. The meeting took place at a time of tension between the Executive and the Legislature, after the President of the Chamber criticized the Minister of Institutional Relations.
This Thursday (April 25), the deputy was asked if the president signaled support for any candidate to succeed him. He replied that the PT member has “referred” O “right” to define the candidate they will support.
Despite saying that he does not have a defined name, Lira had signaled support for deputy Elmar Nascimento (União Brasil-BA) for the position in 2023.
The name of the president of the Republicans, deputy Marcos Pereira (SP), however, gained strength at the beginning of this year.
Deputy Antônio Brito (PSD-BA) is also one of the pre-candidates. He was promoted to the race by the president of his party, Gilberto Kassab. The leader of the MDB, Isnaldo Bulhões (AL), is also in the running, for now.
