PF seizes R$50,000 in the car of senator Mecias de Jesus just a few days before the election for mayor in Alto Alegre | Roraima

The Federal Police seized R$50,000 from the car in which Senator Mecias de Jesus was traveling (Republicans) this Thursday (25) in Alto Alegre, a municipality in the interior of Roraima where the supplementary election will take place to choose the new mayor next Sunday (28).

The amount seized was divided into R$100 bills. The PF did not say whether anyone was taken to the police station.

The PF seizure occurs four days before the vote in which residents of Alto Alegre go to the polls to choose between candidates Valdenir Magrão (MDB), who is the interim mayor, and Wagner Nunes (Republicans), supported by the senator. The elected mayor remains in office until December 2024.

“I’m here in Alto Alegre and a few minutes ago I was having lunch and, following a complaint from the mayor who is a prisoner here in Alto Alegre and his partner, Magrão, the Federal Police came here and raided my cars. With a population of 21,096 people and 25,454.297 km² of territorial area in 2022, Alto Alegre is the third most populous municipality and the fourth largest in area in Roraima. The electorate is made up of 11,216 people.

Called a supplementary election, the April vote is provided for in the Electoral Code and occurs, among other possibilities, when the diploma is revoked or the mandate is lost. However, it does not cancel the traditional election, that is, the municipal election in October 2024 continues as planned.

Approximately 114 kilometers from the capital Boa Vista, Alto Alegre’s main economic activity is public administration and is also one of the main land access routes to illegal mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Land.
