Albino Manique, icon of traditionalist music from RS, dies | Rio Grande do Sul

The musician and accordionist died this Thursday morning (24), in Porto Alegre. Albino Manique, founder of the group Os Mirins. The artist, born in São Francisco de Paula, in Serra do Rio Grande do Sul, was 80 years old and was considered an icon of traditionalist music.

According to family members, Manique was facing health problems due to lung cancer. He had been hospitalized for about three weeks.

Manique’s career began at the age of 12, alongside Francisco Castilhos, with whom she formed Dupla Mirim. Later, the partnership with Antoninho Duarte and, later, with Oscarzinho resulted in the renowned group Os Mirins.

In 2014, Albino Manique was awarded the Guri Trophy, an initiative by the RBS Group that recognizes personalities from Rio Grande do Sul who stand out in their areas of activity, promoting Rio Grande do Sul to Brazil and the world.

“There isn’t a bagpiper who doesn’t say that Albino was a reference in the way he played, in the way he composed and a guy who was always in a very big category. He will be greatly missed, but he will certainly never stop being talked about in the story of Albino Manique”, he told g1 the presenter of Galpão Crioulo, from RBS TVNeto Fagundes.

Albino Manique’s wake is scheduled to begin at 5pm this Monday, in Chapel C of the São Miguel e Almas Cemetery.
