Entities linked to the education sector met with the president of the Legislative Assembly of RS, Adolfo Brito (PP), this Monday (1st), to report a concern: the increase in conflict in schools in Rio Grande do Sul with the restriction of educators’ activities . He was alerted to the actions of the Parliamentary Front Against Ideological Indoctrination in Education, which has been appointing “regional coordinators” to be the “eyes and ears” of the front in schools.

The meeting was requested by deputy Sofia Cavedon (PT), president of the Education Committee. It included the participation of the director of the Union of Private Education Teachers of RS (Sinpro/RS), Cecília Farias, also from the Front for the Freedom of Learning and Teaching; by Júlio Sá, from the Association of Fathers and Mothers for Democracy; and the regional prosecutor of the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) in RS and representative of the Forum to Combat Intolerance and Hate Speech of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Citizens’ Rights of the MPF, Enrico Rodrigues de Freitas.

At the meeting, concerns were raised about encouraging the production of evidence against teachers, with accusations of supposedly ideological indoctrinating approaches. This interference, as reported by the meeting participants, harms not only educators, but students and society, as it breaks families’ trust in the school and the possibility of resolving possible conflicts through dialogue.

Sofia stated that the debates of the parliamentary fronts are legitimate for any topic, but they should not induce society to increase the conflict with the school. “The school needs to be supported, protected, so that it can fully live its democratic management, resolving, whenever possible, pedagogically the conflicts that arise, which are natural to human coexistence”, she said.

“Image destroyed without any sign of so-called indoctrination”

Cecília Farias, from the Front for the Freedom of Learning and Teaching, highlighted that the Sinpro/RS Teacher Support Center has received many requests for help from teachers who have been threatened and even fired, often without further analysis. She stated that teacher and student organizations are very concerned about the intrusion in schools.

“The image of teachers is destroyed without any sign of so-called indoctrination. We see initiatives that attempt, in addition to interfering in the educational process, to create mechanisms of censorship and representation that are clearly illegal”, said Cecília.

The federal prosecutor and also representative of the Forum to Combat Intolerance and Hate Speech of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Citizens’ Rights of the MPF, Enrico Rodrigues de Freitas, emphasized that mechanisms such as recording teachers and reporting channels are completely illegal. He informed that the MPF will officiate the presidency of the Legislative Assembly with legal support for this illegality. He cited a ruling by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), disapproving a specific municipal law on “non-party schools”, to explain that, contrary to some positions, it is the State’s obligation to promote debate on topics that affect Human Rights, for example.

Júlio Sá, from the Association of Fathers and Mothers for Democracy, proposed measures to combat actions whose purpose is to prevent teachers from exercising their freedom of teaching and restrict plural, free and democratic education.

The president of ALRS, deputy Adolfo Brito, informed that he will forward the documents for analysis by the Legal Department of the Legislative House in order to take the appropriate measures.

The Parliamentary Front against Ideological Indoctrination in Education was launched in November 2023, proposed by deputy Captain Martim (Republicans). At the time, he said that the damage caused to students by people who act with the intention of imprinting their political-ideological bias needs to be combatted, a function that would be performed ahead.
