While the number of abandoned animals reaches 40 million in Brazil, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the state of Rio had around 3.4 million in 2023, 2.2 million dogs and 1.2 million catsaccording to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
