Uberaba will have a special program to receive the title of UNESCO Geopark
Until then, there were 195 geoparks in 48 countries, five of which were in Brazil:
The proposal sent by Uberaba to become a World Geopark, called “Land of Giants”, included three main pillars:
- “Place where Chico Xavier revealed himself to world spiritualism”since Chico spent a good part of his life in the city.
- “Zebu Capital of the World”due to the importance of local livestock farming;
- “Land of Dinosaurs in Brazil”due to paleontology work in the rural neighborhood of Peirópolis.
According to the Municipality, the title will generate several benefits for Uberaba and the state of Minas Gerais, such as the promotion of sustainable tourism and the development of the economy and entrepreneurship.
According to UNESCO, World Geoparks are unified geographic areas, where places of international geological relevance are managed based on a concept of protection, education and sustainable development.
The title is not only linked to the geological issue, but also seeks to expand the exploration and development of regions in natural, cultural and intangible aspects.
The certification demonstrates the presence of spaces with a diversity of tourism options, which serve as an alternative for the development of municipalities.
The UNESCO World Geopark designation is granted by four years. After this period, the functioning and quality of each Geopark are completely re-examined in a revalidation process.
