The Amazonas Geographic and Historical Institute (IGHA) is a cultural, historical and scientific institute, with archival and research purposes that is celebrating 107 years of activity in 2024.

It was founded in 1917 and listed as historical heritage by the State Council for the Defense of the Historical and Artistic Heritage of Amazonas (CEDPHA) in 1980. The process of founding the Geographic and Historical Institute of Amazonas began on March 11, 1917, the date of the first minutes of the meeting, where a committee was appointed to draw up the institution’s statute.

For the President of IGHA, José dos Santos Pereira Braga, the body was essential for the construction of the history of Amazonas.

“The Institute took on a leading role in various fields of study, as a center of memory and in bringing together the intelligence of the time around a cultural institution, which until then did not exist. This path has been followed and maintained, and what is more, enhanced “, said the president.

The institute is able to carry out research in the most diverse areas, such as: history, anthropology, philosophy, astronomy, botany, on the state limits of the region, geology, agriculture, commerce, navigation, in addition to the ability to deal with the most diverse documents to respect for the region. The institute also had the function of filling gaps in Amazonian intellectual production.

The president of IGHA highlighted important changes for the institute over the years, including the inclusion of women

” The change that can also be highlighted occurred with the entry of women as members, which began only in the 1960s, while nowadays we can count on the lucidity and intelligence of several professors and social scientists ( …). Another aspect is that since the foundation and until the 1960s, only Freemasons had been presidents of the Institute, and this was broken with judge André Araújo, this is because the IGHA was created under the inspiration of Freemasonry and by members of the Masonic institution, which also implied a restriction on the presence of women in its ranks, although this was not a restriction expressed in statute”, stated the president.

IGHA is located on Rua Frei José dos Inocentes, in a two-story building in the historic center of Manaus. The institute’s collection contains legal documents, leaflets, magazines and newspapers. These documents date back to provincial times and also from the first years of the First Republic. The space can be visited free of charge.

“People can and should. It’s great that we welcome everyone interested in studies about the Amazon. The library, archive and museum are franchised, free of charge, not as much as we would like since our staff is small, but we are always available to welcome visitors”, said the president.
