Yellow September: minister warns of signs that precede suicide

The month of September is marked by suicide prevention actions across the country, through the Yellow September campaign. According to data presented by the campaign, carried out since 2014, by the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry (ABP), in partnership with the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), in Brazil about 14 thousand cases are registered per year, that is, an average of 38 a day.

Among young people aged 15 to 29, it is the fourth leading cause of death, behind traffic accidents, tuberculosis and interpersonal violence.

In an interview with Voz do Brasil, the Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights, Cristiane Britto, recalled the importance of families paying attention to behavioral signs, especially in children and young people, that can lead to suicide.

“We have been encouraging society to observe the signs. And, this year, we have been wanting to involve the family, so that they can observe the signs. Those who are in depression want acceptance, they need to be heard. Do not ignore signs, especially from children and those who are in their teens,” said the minister.

According to her, the Covid-19 pandemic has worsened the situation.

“Unfortunately, the pandemic has brought us a worsening in the mental health of all Brazilians and has affected children from the age of six. The age group of Brazilians who are affected by suicide or suicide attempts is 11 to 19 years old. The male profile prevails. And we have been very concerned about that. We need to talk about suicide and self-harm,” he said.

Among the signs that should draw people’s attention, according to Cristiane Britto, are isolation, changes in food and sleep, self-mutilation, self-depreciation, interruption of plans and abandonment of study and employment.

“We always advise them to look for psychosocial care centers (Caps), Cras, a hospital. If there is any sign that the person has attempted suicide, call Samu, call the Fire Department. The Fire Department has been our great partner”, explained the minister.
