Animal welfare is a set of standards that is gaining ground around the world and has been practiced for many years at Coopavel. Last week, the cooperative’s pig sector involved drivers and loading teams in a talk with veterinarian Cleandro Pazinato, who was in Cascavel (PR), through a partnership with Vetanco.

Reference – With more than 30 years of experience, Cleandro is considered a reference in pig farming issues. “In animal welfare alone, there have been two decades of learning and transmission of knowledge,” he says. Respecting the limitations of the animals, which are taken to slaughter after remaining for 110 days in stalls with little space for movement, counts a lot in the process.

Equipment – Equipment that could hurt pigs should not be used or methods that produce stress should be used. The more well-being practices are present, the better the results will be for the breeder, the cooperative and consumers, according to Cleandro. Drivers were instructed on correct truck maintenance, cleaning of transport boxes and compliance with regulation 113, which addresses the treatment that must be given to animals.

Model – The loader teams, in turn, received training using a model and information on standardization of management and the correct way to care for pigs. “It is necessary to understand responses and behavior, avoiding stress that can lead to fights and losses”, says the veterinarian from the Pig Promotion area at Coopavel, Gustavo Bernart. Training will soon be aimed at pig farmers integrated into the cooperative. (Coopavel Press Office)
